Is BBL a laser?
BBL stands for BroadBand Light. Although sometimes called “BBL laser”, it is a light-based technology within the IPL family rather than a laser. Filters select ranges of light. The device model and proposed treatment should be clarified during your consultation.
What can be assessed?
Selected sun spots, uneven pigmentation and superficial vascular redness may be considered. Redness has several causes, and conditions such as rosacea need their own management plan. Melasma, darker skin tones and recent tanning require particular care in selecting treatment.
Before treatment
An examination should establish the diagnosis and review sun exposure and medicines that may increase light sensitivity. Eye protection and, where appropriate, a test area are important. Response and tolerance guide further sessions; another person’s photographs cannot predict your result.
Recovery and care
Temporary redness, sensitivity or darkening of treated spots may occur. Burns, blisters and potentially lasting pigment changes are also possible. Avoid irritation and picking crusts, and follow moisturising and sun-protection advice. Contact your clinician about unexpected reactions.
Frequently asked questions
Is BBL suitable for every dark spot?
No. Some lesions need another treatment or observation after diagnosis.
Will the results last forever?
Sun exposure and underlying conditions can contribute to new changes; ongoing protection and review may be needed.
